The start and stop…
This is one my earliest photos and sometimes I fear my best.
September 22, 1985 Hurricane Gloria was set to hit New England and they closed the schools. I would have been a high school senior. My aunt had given me a old B&W camera. A Minolta I think. I spent the morning in my room waiting for the storm but it seemed like a big nothing-burger. I got bored and thought it would be good to idea to explore the neighborhood, camera in hand, trying to figure out how it worked.
There were trees down but I was expecting (hoping) for more excitement and carnage. I came upon this stop sign down the street from my house plastered with leaves from the wind and these two apples, presumably from a nearby apple tree, impaled on the sign. I don’t know how exactly it happened but it certainly seemed photo-worthy. I have traveled the world since, often with a camera in hand, thinking that equally ‘decisive moments’ would fall into my lap but they haven’t.
